King of the Mountains" WRS, BDS Racing Promotions Look toward the"Crown Jewel 30"At West Virginia Motor Speedway
Over $15,000 on the line
You got to love it when a plan comes together. That's what the "King of the Mountains" Weekly Racing Series and BDS Racing Promotions are saying about their partnership in 2007. Not only great car counts and exciting Late Model racing, but a signature event to boot, that will literally "Crown" a champion on the front stretch of the 5/8 mile "speed plant".
BDS Racing Promotions and KOM officials are looking towards the RACEFEST weekend as a coming out party for the newly formed Late Model weekly racing series. In its first year of existence, Series Director Rocky Estep has seen instant success with his brainchild. Car counts at both sanctioned tracks, Tyler and Beckley , have both seen considerable increases from week to week.
"This gives local steel block late model drivers the chance to compete on the larger stage without having to battle the Bloomquists, Pearsons and Morans of the racing world. They go out knowing they have a chance to win," says one of the BDS trio of the $2000 to win, $200 to start event. "We need local people to know that this kind of event is going on out there (WVMS) so our locals have plenty of support. Most of the steel block late model race cars in the Ohio Valley would be eligible under the KOM rules package, and some may have to make some very minor changes."
BDS, knowing the value of a good Late Model show, wanted to add that value to the 2007 version of RACEFEST. Adding an actual late model show to Friday night's under card will allow late model lovers to get their fix for the fall weekend early. While the Lucas Oil Late Models are relegated to Saturday only, BDS decided to beef up the Friday night lineup with "King of the Mountains" Late Models headlining along with AMRA.
The weekend itself means double KOM points, an $8700 purse including $2000 for the winner of the "Crown Jewel 30", crowning of each track/regional champ ($250 cash ), a $5000 point fund, and the inaugural "KOM Coronation" complete with an engraved sword for the overall points champ. Let's not forget sorting out the top ten in points while on the 5/8 mile "speed plant", to decide who goes home with the $1000 in cash for the top point man of 2007.
"There are several possible scenarios in play here", explains Series Regional Director Rocky Estep, "With this being a Double Points race, you can come in here running 5th in the points and leave 1st or 2nd. Or you could come in running 10th in points and win this thing and possibly walk away with more money than even the "King". It's great to be able to give our "Weekly Racers" that have been so faithful to our KoM sanctioned tracks and the KoM series an opportunity to make a little money."
And speaking of points, as of July 21st, less than ten points separated #2 Sonny Conley and current top point man Joel Prosser who finished exactly 2-3 in Saturday's battle at TCS with Conley second and Prosser third both behind current sixth place, and first time feature winner, Mike Griffin.
"One of our key objectives is to make racing more affordable and more competitive for more people. We want to give folks an opportunity to win that 1st race, like Mike, or even just to be out there having a "FUN" without 2nd Mortgaging their homes."
While the 2007 season winds down, racers will look ratchet down for the season wrap up and look forward to RACEFEST weekend where this year's "King" will be crowned. |
